The Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka (IESL) is a signatory to the Washington Accord (WA) and is a member of the International Professional Engineers Agreement, IPEA (formally known as the Engineers Mobility Forum - EMF), which are two internationally recognized agreements.
The Washington Accord is an international agreement among bodies responsible for accrediting engineering degree programs. It recognizes the substantial equivalency of programs accredited by those bodies and recommends that graduates of programs accredited by any of the signatory bodies be recognized by the other bodies as having met the academic requirements for entry to the practice of engineering. Australia, Canada, Chinese Taipei ,Hong Kong China, India, Ireland, Japan, Korea , Malaysia, New Zealand, Russia Singapore, South Africa, Turkey, United Kingdom and United States are the other signatories to the Washington Accord.
The IPEA is an agreement that facilitates cross-border practice by experienced Professional Engineers. In general this means that a Professional Engineer of one IPEA member country will be able to practice in another IPEA member country without being required to obtain any additional qualifications or experience. The other members of the IPEA are Australia, Canada, Chinese Taipei ,Hong Kong China, India, Ireland, Japan, Korea , Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore, South Africa, United Kingdom and United States.
To obtain the International Professional Engineer - IntPE (Sri Lanka) - status from IESL under IPEA criteria, an applicant has to be a Chartered Engineer with a 4 year engineering degree recognized by IESL plus a minimum of 7 years experience after graduation of which at least 2 years should have been in a responsible position. The assessment will be through a competency based assessment scheme and the applicant should maintain a satisfactory level of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) annually.
